Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need an Internet connection to use Creative Cloud applications?

A: All Creative Cloud desktop applications are downloaded directly to your computer. Once an application is installed, you won’t need to be connected to the Internet in order to use it. (Downloading the latest updates and using features like Sync Settings requires an Internet connection.)

Q: If I decide to leave Creative Cloud, will I lose access to my files?

A: When you create files with any of the creative apps from Adobe, the files are yours. Adobe doesn’t take any ownership of those files. When you save your files to Creative Cloud, you’ll always have a local copy of them. Even if you cancel your Creative Cloud membership, your files remain on your local hard drive. And you’ll always have access to a free level of membership that provides 2GB of storage for files.

Q: With Creative Cloud, will I be forced to always run the newest version of the applications?

A: You will always have access to the latest versions of all the Creative Cloud applications, but you won’t be forced to upgrade. You can continue to run whichever version you want until you’re ready to download and install the latest version. You will also have access to older versions of the software to download, starting with CS6.

Adobe completely screwed over their professional users.
As a long time user of the Creative Suite (since CS2), I have always updated my software as updates were available. Owning my own design studio, there was one year where i went from CS3-4-5. As a very small business, this was an expensive upgrade but still affordable. Each upgrade averaged $350-400. Because I spent the money back when CS2 was available (and i am sure it was at least $1500) I made the commitment to Adobe and have since then. Unlike many others out there who pirate software.

Now Adobe is telling me I have to spend $50/month, to the tune of $600 a year to use their products?
Screw that. As long as my clients are still using CS6, I will not fall into the CC scheme.

I feel that Adobe should have grandfathered in long time users at an affordable rate that is equivalent to what our upgrades used to cost us.
    Adobe, SHAME ON YOU.

    REASON TO AVOID THE CLOUD:

    1. The subscription model eventually removes all pressure for Adobe to innovate.

It used to be that Adobe had to win our hard earned money over with amazing new features. If the upgrades were lacklusters, then people simply skipped them and waited until there were a good enough release to warrant spending money.

With the new model customers have no choice but to keep spending, since Adobe will take away everything if they ever stop paying. What are you going to do when this publicly traded company does what it’s supposed to do and spends as little money on development as it possibly thinks it can get away with? You have no way to protest with your wallet, since no serious entrepreneur can suddenly just stop opening the files they have created.

    2. It’s way more expensive than the old models, no matter how you try to spin the numbers. Adobe is admitting this too when it’s addressing the stockholders in the 10k form by officially stating:
over time we expect this business model transition will significantly increase our long term
revenue growth rate by (1) attracting new users, (2) keeping our user base current and (3) thereby driving higher average
    revenue per user.

    3. Higher prices for the rest of the world.
Adobe is charging a lot more for international customers which has no real basis in a digitally distributed product.

    4.Technical issues.
The cloud forums are full of customers with huge amounts of technical issues, especially regarding the activations, which are now a monthly thing instead of something you did only after installation. Adobe seems to think of it’s users as beta testers and keep releasing buggy software. This problem is even worse with the cloud model.

    5. Terrible customer support
When things go wrong, as they will, you have no other choice than to talk on the phone with someone who is very likely from India. Yes, not online chat or even a ticket system. I guess it’s nice for Adobe that their customer support doesn’t put anything in writing so it’s harder to show people the many half-truths their agents are spurring. And guess what: even the phone service is shut down during weekends. So if your cloud software stops working at friday evening, you are out of luck until monday morning. Thanks Adobe!

    6. More frequent activations
Everybody hates the hassle of software activations. Well now there will more of that joy. You basically need to connect every month now. Not nice especially for those who like to keep their workstations offline and sterile. Activations are only punishing those of us who already bought the software. Pirates can easily circumvent activations so they actually have no need for activating their software. Activations end up only bullying the honest customers.

Now all your copies can stop working because of a single point failure in the activation server. Many people are reporting repeated monthly problems with activation. And of course, if you miss a critical deadline because of a mistake made by Adobe, their license agreement makes sure they have no responsibility or liability in the matter

    7. You can only buy the subscription with a credit card
Before you could use whatever payment methods the reseller provided, like Paypal etc. Now it’s credit card only. Well all Americans might have credit cards. That’s certainly not the case for the rest of the world and I believe that is a good thing. Many students don’t have credit cards. Many cities and communes definitely won’t be able to pay with a credit card.

    8. You have to commit to a full year of subscription or the price is even higher.
That’s right, if you thought the 50 $ price is high, it get’s even better if you want to have the flexibility of ordering on a monthly basis. In that case you are looking at a whopping 75 $ per month.
